What Makes the SureFit® Calculator the Best Choice?

SureFit® Guarantee: we guarantee the perfect size, or we’ll pay your return shipping costs if an exchange is needed. That way there’s no doubt your pet will get the perfect fit.

We highly recommend using our SureFit® Calculator as it ensures the perfect custom fit for your pet. It requires a couple measurements, but only so we can provide your pet with the very best experience.

We recognize this takes a few minutes of your time, but those minutes are worth the happiness your pet will experience once they try out their wheelchair for the first time. Our wheelchairs have already helped more than 81,000 other pets. Let’s make that 81,001!

Other companies simply have you select a wheelchair based on weight, but that often results in a poor fit. Why? A 30 lb bulldog has a very different body type from a 30 lb corgi, but those companies will provide both with the same wheelchair.

To us, the ideal wheelchair for small breeds has to meet 3 criteria: 1) it has to be comfortable and effortless for your pet to use, 2) it has to be chew-proof and able to withstand the elements, and 3) it has to be simple to set up and transport.

Before we created Walkin' Wheels, we were in your shoes searching for that ideal wheelchair. But after coming up empty handed time after time, we decided to take matters into our own hands. The result is the world's favorite dog wheelchair for small breeds.

The Perfect Fit

A Jack Russell Terrier has a very different body shape from an English Bulldog. Instead of providing both dogs with the same wheelchair, we designed the Walkin' Wheels small dog wheelchair to fit them based on their unique measurements. When you get Walkin' Wheels, your dog will thank you.

Also, your dog will be able to pee and poop without you having to remove their wheelchair.

A Durable, All-Terrain Wheelchair

Dogs love the outdoors. And as we all know, they love tearing up everything in their path. But we love them anyway.

This is why we've created a chew-proof and rust resistant extruded aluminum wheelchair frame. Additionally, the included wheels will not puncture and are all-terrain.

Simple Setup

When we were designing the Walkin' Wheels small dog wheelchair, we knew it had to be simple to use for pets and owners alike. Setting up your pet's new wheelchair is a lot like using a regular dog harness. The only big difference is attaching the harness to the wheelchair frame, which takes only a few seconds. See how quick Marley's wheelchair was to set up and watch as she takes her first steps.

Easy to Transport & Store

The Walkin' Wheels small dog wheelchair is easy to transport to the dog park or store in the closet when not in use. The secret is that we smartly designed the wheelchair to be durable without taking up too much space, so it can fit in a car or anywhere in the home while occupying little room.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair work?

The Walkin’ Wheels rear dog wheelchair is designed to support a pet’s hind legs from underneath, providing stability and reducing pressure on their back legs. The wheels of the cart are aligned with the pet’s hips, enabling proper support in a natural standing position. This allows the pet to walk naturally while using the wheelchair or lift their legs off the ground using the stirrups if they are paralyzed.

Is my pet able to pee or poop while using the wheelchair?

Yes! In fact, your dog’s wheelchair is designed so that dogs can go to the bathroom and get the exercise they need. Not only can pets pee and poop while using their dog wheelchair, but their wheelchair also actually encourages them to go. A “down” dog tends to be less active, which can impact the internal functions of their body. Once a dog is in their wheelchair, they are standing upright and moving more, which encourages their body to function correctly and allow them to relieve themselves naturally.

How does it work?

Both male and female pets can pee and poop freely while using their wheelchair. Their hind end is fully supported from underneath by their rear leg rings, keeping them in a comfortable and natural standing position. There is plenty of clearance for them to relieve themselves cleanly while using their new cart. Although your pet can not squat while in their wheelchair, they will relieve themselves while standing; many pets adjust to this quickly.

How do I measure my dog for a wheelchair?

It’s easy to determine the right size Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair for your pet. All you need is two simple measurements to choose the right size wheelchair for your pet:

  1. Measure the Rear Leg Height to the toe pad, ideally when your pet is lying down. Do not pull the leg tight; leave some natural bend.
  2. Your pet’s armpit to rump (ATR) measurement. To measure your pet’s length, measure from behind the front leg and across to the end of your dog’s body or rump.

Can my dog use its back legs with the wheelchair?

Using a dog wheelchair can provide your pet with the necessary support to stand, walk, and regain their strength. The wheelchair helps relieve pressure and reduces the weight placed on your pet’s legs, thereby making it easier for them to move around. The use of a dog wheelchair encourages your pet to use its rear legs to maintain muscle mass and get exercise. While your pet is using the wheelchair, it will work to develop the muscles in the rear legs and build up its stamina through exercise. It’s important to note that a dog doesn’t need to be fully paralyzed to benefit from using a dog wheelchair. Even if a dog’s rear legs are paralyzed, the stirrups on the wheelchair can be used to prevent the legs from dragging.

How do I get my dog into their wheelchair?

It’s very easy to get a small dog in and out of their Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair. First, place the front harness on your pet, making sure the harness is fitted to their body. Next, place your dog on the ground with the wheelchair positioned behind them. Gently lift your dog’s hind legs and place the legs through the leg rings before lifting the sidebars and clipping the harness to the wheelchair frame.

What comes with my pet’s Walkin’ Wheels?

Your pet’s new Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair comes with everything your pet needs to get up and walking again!

The wheels/struts will be inserted into the leg and adjusted to the proper height. The knuckle has a high and low setting which can be adjusted with a Phillips screwdriver.

Width Connectors

Width Connectors:

Your wheelchair will come with two width connectors (7″ and 4″). One is already installed in the back of your cart. If you need more width, the wheelchair comes equipped with a longer connector in the box.

Length Extenders

Length Extenders:

Your wheelchair will come with two extenders (side rails) installed, which determine the length of your dog. The length of the extender should end in the middle of the dog’s front leg. It should not pass the front leg.

dog wheelchair front harness

The Front Harness

The dog’s head goes between the blue and black straps. The red strap goes under the dog’s front legs and clips on the side of the harness. The shoulder pads are made of neoprene and keep the straps and buckles from causing discomfort for the dog. Neoprene comfort sleeves wrap around the straps for the dog’s comfort. Comfort sleeves can be cut in half if they are too long.

dog wheelchair leg rings

Leg Rings:

The dog’s hindquarters are held in place by the leg rings, or our rear harness support system. The leg rings can also be used as a lifting harness when out of the wheelchair; the excess strapping can be touch-fastened together to make handles on each side.

dog wheelchair wheels

Wheels & Struts:

The wheels are attached to a metal piece called a “strut.” Each wheelchairs comes with either 4″ or 8″ foam wheels, which are great for all terrains. They feature a dense foam interior with an outer rubber layer. These wheels will not puncture, wear extremely well, and are easy to clean. Your dog’s wheel size depends on your pet’s measurements.

dog wheelchair belly support

Belly Belt:

The Belly Belt will help support your dog’s back. It is not always necessary to use the belly belt, but is highly recommended for dogs with a long back, overweight or elderly dogs, dogs with curvature of the spine, and dogs with disc problems.

dog wheelchair stirrups

Stirrups 8″:

Stirrups are used to hold the dog’s legs off the ground so they don’t drag due to paralysis, knuckling under, or foot injuries. The adjustable stirrups are positioned to hold the foot up at the hock. If your dog doesn’t need them, the stirrups may be removed from the wheelchair.

The Manual:

The manual gives instructions and tips on assembling and using the Walkin’ Wheels Wheelchair.

dog wheelchair tool kit

Tool Kit:

The tool kit comes in a plastic bag and includes an Allen wrench and set screws. The (optional) set screws may be used to tighten up the wheelchair frame and reduce flexibility, depending on your preference.

Can my dog use their Walkin’ Wheels inside the house?

Yes. Many dogs will use their Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair both indoors and outside. Inside the house, the small wheelchair can easily maneuver around furniture, across the floor, and easily fits through narrow doors and hallways. Remember, using a wheelchair is new for your best friend, too. It may take your dog some time to learn how to navigate around indoor obstacles. We recommend a lot of praise and encouragement as your dog gets used to life on wheels!

Can my dog lie down in the wheelchair?

If you have a Dachshund or Corgi, it is OK for them to take a rest up against a pillow or bed, because their legs are so short. Otherwise, it is not recommended, due to back or disc issues that could worsen by lying down in the wheelchair. The wheelchair is intended to help your dog stay active, when it’s time for your pup to rest, remove them from the wheelchair so they can relax.

Can my dog sit in the wheelchair?

No, this wheelchair is designed for active use only. Your dog can not sit while using its wheelchair. Our chair is designed NEVER to collapse on the dog’s leg or spine. We’ve gone to great lengths to be sure of it. The chairs are designed with the help of veterinarians and rehabilitation specialists to hold the dog up, keeping the spine and legs in the optimal position for safety and healing.

What’s more, the purpose of the chair is to give the dog exercise and the freedom to go outside and do his business. When the dog is tired, you should never leave him in the chair.

The reviews we have seen of the experimental sit-down spring-loaded style have not been positive. Although we have done a great deal of research, we have not found a safe way for a chair to collapse on a dog.

How adjustable is the wheelchair?

The Walkin’ Wheels wheelchair is an adjustable cart that allows for 2-3″ of adjustability in both height and width, and even more in length. This level of adjustment allows you to finetune the fit of your dog’s cart for a customized fit. Whether your dog gains weight, loses weight, or is still growing, the wheelchair can be adjusted to fit their changing body throughout its lifetime.

Will this wheelchair rehabilitate my dog?

Every dog and disability are unique, and so is their recovery process. It’s quite possible to incorporate a wheelchair into your dog’s physical therapy sessions to help improve their balance, weight distribution, and the wheelchair’s support helps them stay mobile as they heal. We have seen varying degrees of rehabilitation with dogs using wheelchairs. Some dogs have been able to improve so much that they no longer need the wheelchair. While your dog is in the wheelchair, they are improving both their physical and mental health.

How quickly can I expect my wheelchair?

We know nothing is more important than getting your dog back on its feet as quickly as possible. So, we make every effort to ship your wheelchair order out on the very same day.

Please place your order by 12:00 PM EST Monday through Friday to qualify for same-day shipping. Delivery times will vary depending on your location and the shipping method you select. To get your wheelchair quickly, make sure to pick an expedited shipping option at checkout
