AMHERST, NH (February 1, 2017) – A Dachshund surrendered to the Yadkin Park Animal Hospital due to hind limb paralysis is ready for adoption to a loving home. Janet Johnston, a veterinarian at the hospital, has taken care of all of the dog’s medical expenses and enabled him to get a Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair so that he has everything he needs to live a high quality life.
The Dachshund, a 4-year-old neutered male named Grant, sustained a back injury in October 2015. He was operated on and made a full post-surgical recovery. Unfortunately, the dog re-injured his back in November 2016 after jumping off a couch, and became paralyzed. At that point, unable to afford another back surgery for Grant or provide for his special needs, the family surrendered him to the Yadkin Park Animal Hospital, where he has received physical therapy, TENS therapy, and acupuncture to help him re-gain mobility.
Grant has taken to his Walkin’ Wheels extremely well, running around with ease with the help of the wheelchair. Dr. Johnston is currently fostering Grant and providing medical care until the right home is found for him.
Dr. Johnston says, “Grant is such a sweet little guy and loves people. He LOVES to run around in the wheelchair and is starting to try to use his back legs, so I am very hopeful that he will one day walk again. Until then, the wheelchair gives Grant the freedom to be more like a normal dog.”
