Happy National Specially-abled Pets Day!

National Specially-abled Pets Day celebrates all the amazing disabled and special needs pets in need of finding a forever home. Although, physically challenged these animals are fully able to love! They are just waiting for the perfect family to find them!

Animal Rescue Advocate, Colleen Paige, created the day to celebrate “pets that become challenged due to disease, birth flaws or injuries, tend to develop greater senses than your average pet. Most of the time, it’s as if they never had to readjust to life…and we need to keep up with them!”

Many of these pets are surrendered due to the special care they require, and their owners are unable to care for them properly. Traditionally, these incredible pets are harder to adopt. In some cases, these animals can take four times as long to adopt.

Ways to Celebrate

  • Share and retweet any specially-abled pets you see for adoption, to help them get the most exposure.

  • Donate to rescues that specifically care for specially-abled pets.

  • Adopt a specially-abled pet if you can.

  • Volunteer to care for specially-abled pets at local rescues.

Helping a Local Rescue

To celebrate this important day, Walkin’ Pets partnered with the Animal Rescue League NH to share the story of some incredible pets in need and show how truly adoptable they are! And the next time you’re looking for a new best friend, we encourage you to visit your local rescue and consider adopting a specially-abled pet.

Meet Creamsicle

Originally a stray, Creamsicle the cat was found matted and in need of medical care. After being shaved down to remove the mattes, he’s struggled to find the perfect home. Overweight and unable to groom himself he’s in need of some special love and care.

Panda the Guinea PigMeet Panda

Panda is a 5 year old, senior guinea pig. Panda has been passed around to multiple homes and families. Now arthritic, she’s hoping to find the perfect family to love him for the rest of his life.

Meet Olive

A three-year-old shepherd mix who was surrendered after being diagnosed with heart worm. Needing a little extra care, Olive has patiently waited as she healed. Now, a month and a half later, Olive has had her final heart worm treatment and she’s ready to find her forever home!

Amazing work is being done at local animal rescues! Last year along the Animal Rescue League of NH were able to save 1,221 animals!
